About

Sofia Zielyk

Sofia Zielyk, or Sofika, is a native New Yorker who holds a bachelors degree in art history from New York University. She started making Ukrainian Easter eggs, "Pysanky" when she was six, having learned the basics of this traditional Ukrainian craft from her mother. Since that time, Sofika has been in demand at museums, festivals, craft fairs and other venues throughout the east coast. Sofika has demonstrated the art of pysanky at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History in New York City, The United States Senate Building in the Nation's Capital, in FAO Schwartz and B. Altman's department stores and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine . Her eggs have adorned the window display of the famed Steuben Glass store on Fifth Avenue. She has appeared on numerous T.V. shows, among them: ABC Eyewitness News, ABC's "The Home Show", " WNBC's Good Mroning Today New York", "Capital Edition" - an information show in Washington, D.C., as well as, on Japanese television, in a documentary highlighting the work of the Ukrainian Museum. Sofika's interviews have appeared in various newspapers and magazines: New York Newsday, The World and I, the Windham Journal, etc. The young New Yorker's Easter eggs are also on permanent display at the Ukrainian Museum in New York City.

Most recently, photographs of Sofika's eggs have been prominently featured in a coffee table book entitled "Decorative Eggs" published in Crescent Books. In early 1993, a bilingual book on "The Art of the Pysanka" by Sofika was printed in Ukraine. It contains 100 color photographs of her eggs as well as sections on the lore of the Ukrainian easter egg and step-by-step instructions. The radical changes in Ukraine have given Sofika a unique opportunity to exhibit her work in her ancestral homeland. She is the first American of Ukrainian descent to be asked to mount a travelling exhibit of 250 eggs. Following a 3-month stay in the city of Kaniv, the exhibit was moved to the capital - Kyiv. It resided there until September, 1992 and is currently travelling throughout eastern and western Ukraine.
